Great news, South Carolina!
As part of the state’s Palmetto Project, the South Carolina Department of Education is excited to announce a new initiative to support 5,500 K–3 educators and elementary principals from Tier-2 and Tier-3 schools with evidence-based practices for reading instruction.
The South Carolina LETRS Science of Reading Professional Learning Courses will provide sustained and job-embedded professional learning about the science of reading, at no cost to selected educators and leaders. These impactful courses will be based on Lexia’s LETRS® (Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling) literacy professional learning for teachers, and LETRS® for Administrators. LETRS is based on the science of reading, which teaches the how, what, and why of literacy acquisition to improve instructional practice and impact long-term systemic change in literacy instruction. LETRS for Administrators equips instructional leaders with the knowledge, science, and tools to implement and sustain a successful literacy initiative.
The South Carolina LETRS Science of Reading Professional Learning Courses are part of the state's comprehensive plan to apply millions of dollars in federal relief to improve student literacy. The LETRS course of study gives teachers and administrators the skills they need to teach language and literacy to every student, even those with reading challenges like dyslexia.
What is LETRS?
LETRS® (Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling) is comprehensive professional learning designed to provide elementary educators and administrators with deep knowledge to be literacy and language experts in the science of reading. Developed by Dr. Louisa Moats and leaders in the field of literacy, LETRS teaches the skills needed to master the foundation and fundamentals of reading and writing instruction—phonological awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, comprehension, and written language.
LETRS for Administrators teaches how to build capacity, collaborate with school leadership teams, manage goal setting, develop assessment plans, and make effective data-based decisions to have systemic impact on student literacy achievement.
We are excited about what this means for South Carolina. Collaboration between districts, schools, administration, and teachers is essential for success. By working together, we can do better for our students. By providing this high-quality, evidence-based professional learning opportunity, we are providing every student the opportunity to be prepared for a successful and productive life – which aligns with the profile of the South Carolina graduate AND is the key to the future of our state, nation, and world.
Quincie L. Moore, Ph.D.
I have spent my entire career in the education profession and have attended, conducted, and organized countless professional learning opportunities. Without question, I believe that the Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling (LETRS) professional learning opportunity is and will be a game changer for our elementary teachers, and ultimately, the children of South Carolina. Under Superintendent Spearman’s guidance and direction, the South Carolina Department of Education (SCDE) is providing this unique opportunity for numerous educators in the Palmetto Literacy Project (PLP) across our state and we truly believe that we will move the needle in student achievement with this endeavor. It will be a journey, but we at the SCDE are committed and focused to making this opportunity a successful one for all involved.

“Teachers are the most important factor in student success. Informed teachers can explain language to students, including sounds, spellings, and word meanings that might be confusing. They use lessons based on reading science and understand the process of learning to read and write. Research proves it. Science matters.”
